Everyone knows brakes are important, and it’s essential for them to work flawlessly when we need them most. Good brakes will slow your car down across a variety of conditions, but a better quality brake will also emit less noise, and provide a smoother ride.
The two parts of the braking system we are most familiar with, and most often need maintenance, are the pads and discs. Each of these parts play an essential role in how your brakes perform and feel.
Let’s start with the discs. Discs are susceptible to corrosion even when they’re in storage. To prevent this, most manufacturers coat their discs with oil. It’s a cost effective way for the manufacturer to protect the discs, but you end up paying for their cost savings. Obviously we don’t want oil on our brakes, so that means the service technician needs to spend time cleaning the oil off, and preparing the discs for installation, and that time is billed to you. Genuine Mercedes-Benz brakes are covered in a zinc corrosion protection. This corrosion protection does not need to be removed, meaning less billed time in service. Once the discs are on the road, the zinc coating continues to protect against corrosion, which is important because it helps prevent chipping and uneven wear. The zinc coating on the Mercedes-Benz disks is designed to provide a long lasting, smooth braking experience. Genuine Mercedes-Benz discs also tested the lowest in vibration, allowing for a smoother and more comfortable driving experience. When looking at all safety related tests, Mercedes-Benz had the most stable performance regardless of driving and vehicle conditions, such as high temperature, speed, or vehicle load, when tested against aftermarket competitors.
Working in partnership with the braking discs are the pads. Generally speaking, there are either hard pads or soft pads. Hard pads work just fine and they won’t create much brake dust on your rim, but during testing these were often found to be extremely noisy. The softness of genuine Mercedes-Benz pads results in a quieter, and more luxurious ride. Additionally, hard pads can prematurely wear the discs.
Using the combination of genuine Mercedes-Benz pads and discs ensures you get the best possible driving experience from your Mercedes-Benz.
